PREVIEW | KIMBERLEY MINERS WELFARE VS CLEETHORPES TOWN (h)

THE MINERS WELCOME THE OWLS TO THE STAG FOR THE FA CUP

UP NEXT, after the opening first two league matches, the FA Cup is next in line as Step 4 Cleethorpes Town take a trip to the Midlands for the second time in five days.

Cleethorpes make a two hour trip from the mouth of the Humber Estuary to Kimberley. Directions will be slightly different to their expectations as Main Street is closed off in sections, but their scout from last weekend will be able to pass on the general travel information. With a reward in the preliminary rounds proper up for grabs, the team from the Northern Premier League Division One East will go into the match as favourites.

The miners go into the fixture on the back of a 3-3 draw against Gresley Rovers at the weekend. Kimberley went into half time 3-0 up as Paul Johnson scored after just three minutes, followed by a goal seven minutes later from Lewis Weaver, followed by a second for him on the half hour mark. This, however, didn't tell the whole story of the first half as Tom Smith in goal had the half of his life, making three great saves from open play and a stunning penalty save on twenty minutes. An even half saw some great finishing at one end and great goalkeeping at the other set up a great second half. Gresley came back out with all guns blazing. Jamie Sleigh got a goal back on 61. With the Kimberley players tiring, Gresley scored twice in three minutes on 76 and 78 to level things up. The Miners brought some subs on towards the end to inject some fresh legs into the game, but it was too little, too late to get back in front. Gresley hit the crossbar in the closing minutes, with the game finishing 3-3. Great match

Cleethorpes’ last match was another trip to the Midlands, where they faced Matlock Town for their final pre-season friendly. Matlock took the lead on 10 minutes through Wood. However, it took Cleethorpes just three minutes to bag an equaliser through Dockerty, with Haw giving the Owls the lead on half time. Middleton wrapped up the surprise away win on 83 minutes for 3-1 to Cleethorpes.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS

The two sides don’t look to have met at all in recent history

A LITTLE ABOUT THE OPPOSITION

The club was established by Tommy Watson in 1998 as the Lincolnshire Soccer School, with Watson playing for and managing the club. As LSS Lucarly's, they joined the Lincolnshire League in 2003, where they played for two seasons. In 2005 the club transferred to the Premier Division of the Central Midlands League in 2005. However, after one season they left to join Division One of the Humber Premier League. After finishing third in their first season in the division, they were promoted to the Premier Division. In 2008 the club adopted their current name.

Cleethorpes pulled out of the Humber Premier League during the 2009–10 season, but rejoined the Lincolnshire League for the 2010–11 season, which saw them win the Supplementary Cup. After winning the league and Challenge Cup in 2011–12, they were promoted to Division One of the Northern Counties East League. In 2013–14 they won Division One, earning promotion to the Premier Division. In 2015–16 they won the League Cup, beating Tadcaster Albion 3–2 in the final. The following season saw the club win the Premier Division, earning promotion to Division One South of the Northern Premier League. They also won the Lincolnshire County Senior Trophy with a 1–0 win over Deeping Rangers in the final, as well as reaching the final of the FA Vase at Wembley, where they lost 4–0 to South Shields.

In 2018–19 Cleethorpes won the Lincolnshire Senior Cup for the first time, defeating Stamford 5–3 on penalties after a 3–3 draw.
